The latest report to the UN, submitted by the Michael McKevitt Justice Campaign, has resulted in the case being brought to the attention of two further UN Special Rapporteurs. The Special Rapporteur on the independence of the judiciary and the Special Rapporteur on human rights while countering terrorism
The Special Rapporteur on the independence of the judiciary has a number of functions, including to examine ” violations regarding the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and the independence of the legal profession”.
The Special Rapporteur on human rights while countering terrorism has the mandate – among other issues – to assess whether human rights, including due process, are respected for all persons that face terrorism or related charges. He has been active in a number of cases that are similar to Mr. McKevitt’s.
